The Opportunity:

Task & Purpose, a leading news and opinion site covering the military, defense, and global affairs for a massive audience of active duty service members and veterans, is seeking a visionary Editor-in-Chief who will oversee all of its editorial and content initiatives and put it on a strong growth trajectory.

The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for establishing an editorial vision for Task & Purpose that lives up to its reputation as a trusted, beloved daily news source for America’s military community and ensures it can expand into new coverage areas. The ideal candidate is a seasoned defense reporter or editor with experience leading teams and a track record of stellar journalism and digital audience growth. The Editor-in-Chief will oversee and own everything Task & Purpose does, from daily news coverage to long-term enterprise journalism to its burgeoning gear review operation.

While Recurrent Ventures is a “virtual office” remote-first company, candidates on Eastern Standard Time will be prioritized, and an Editor-in-Chief based in Washington, D.C. would be preferred. Candidates who are military veterans themselves are very strongly encouraged to apply.

This role will report to the Editorial Director, Autos and Military, and partner closely with the General Manager.

The Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily and long-term news, features and opinions coverage
  • Manage a dedicated, industry-leading team of staff writers, editors, and contributors
  • Ensure the highest quality coverage of America’s military, global defense, and critical issues facing active duty service members and veterans
  • Apply a “big picture” approach to where T&P needs to go and make sure it is meeting its current goals
  • Manage the editors who oversee T&P’s gear/commerce team and ensure goals are met
  • Define the editorial voice of Task & Purpose and ensure it carries across all platforms
  • Identify key growth areas, such as new editorial coverage areas and platform expansions like podcasts, and organize the team to execute the editorial plan
  • Work closely with audience editors to distribute T&P’s content across multiple channels and social media platforms
  • Plan and manage the editorial budget and editorial calendar
  • Represent the brand at external events and media appearances
  • Set the tone daily for what the site is doing, where it needs to go and how the team should operate

The Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years working in journalism, with significant time spent covering the military and defense and at a major national or international publication
  • Experience hiring, managing, and mentoring direct reports
  • Impeccable writing, reporting and editing skills
  • Experience with social media platforms, SEO tools like Google Analytics, SEMRush/Ahrefs, and a strong sense of digital media growth
  • Experience managing an editorial budget
  • Experience navigating complicated stories, including enterprise stories that may require legal review

  • A true leader with excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate seamlessly with multiple stakeholders and departments, including in tech, advertising, and other business functions
  • The flexibility to oversee and understand many different types of content, and to delegate when necessary
  • The ability to engage and grow digital audiences and make sure T&P’s journalism reaches a wide array of readers beyond its core demographic
  • A growth mindset, a cool demeanor under pressure and a willingness to lead by example every day
