The Opportunity, the online home of America’s #1 home improvement icon, is seeking freelance SEO editors to join its team of contributors.

Visited by millions each month, publishes and updates content daily, with themes running the gamut from aspirational to instructional. Readers trust the brand for answers to their peskiest appliance problems, shopping guidance for household staples, and advice on how to streamline household maintenance. Therefore, we rely on our editors to help us create accessible, solidly researched service content on anything and everything related to the home: must-do maintenance, real estate, organization, renovation, design, DIY, yard work, and much more.

Rates range from $30 to $50 per hour, commensurate with your experience. The stories themselves range between 700 and 2,000 words, depending on the format.

The Responsibilities

Our service content comes in the form of advice columns, how-tos, shopping guides, roundups of dos and don’ts, and more. Currently, our team’s mission is to enhance some of our older published stories. Each assignment will involve:

  • Assessing how we might turn an article into a more complete resource for readers
  • Executing on that with fact-checking, additional reporting, sharp writing, and optimization as needed.
  • Editors will ensure that the content is complete, accurate, grammatically correct, and optimized according to SEO and affiliate best practices.
  • Prioritize packaging the need-to-know info in a well-researched, easy-to-digest story.
  • To paint clear pictures with our words and leave no unanswered questions for our readers, who are of all skill levels when it comes to home maintenance projects and design.

The Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in digital media, preferably in the home and garden spaces
  • Experience using SEMrush, Ahrefs, Surfer, and other relevant tools to improve content performance
  • Keen understanding of SEO best practices
  • Terrific critical thinking skills, and strong editorial judgment as to what makes a good story
  • Sharp research, writing, and editing skills
  • Conscientious about deadlines, and in regular communication with the editorial staff

The Person

  • Is a detail-oriented SEO editor
  • Has an interest in home and garden
  • Experience in lifestyle and shelter publications is preferred,
  • Is available to take on at least 10 assignments per month.
